Overview:
Even a non-reader can talk about the controversies this novel spurred up when it was released in the year 2003. “The Da Vinci Code” was written by famous American author Dan Brown, who, once again, has used Robert Langdon as the lead character. The story follows a battle between Opus Dei and the Priory of Sion, who fight for the possession of the Holy Grail. It explains in an unconventional manner, the life of Jesus Christ and how he got married to Mary Magdalene.
Plot:
Like in the previous book, Angels and Demons, Robert Langdon finds himself facing a strange murder of the curator of the Louvre museum in Paris. And after that, when Langdon realizes that he is the prime suspect for the murder, a game of cats and mice begins where Langdon is trying to gain as much knowledge and evidence as possible to prove his innocence. In the process he meets Sophie Neveu, who is an agent for the French Police but knows that Langdon is innocent and therefore wants to help. Another coincidence is that the dead curator happens to be Sophie’s grandfather. Together they travel from France to England and, in the end, prove themselves innocent.
Controversies:
Numerous controversies arose when “The Da Vinci Code” was released. There was huge outbreak of protests in Vatican City, where cardinals and the Pope himself accused the book of insulting Christianity by declaring that Jesus did not die celibate and got married to Mary Magdalene. The book even mentions that the couple reproduced and their bloodline still exists. It also says that the Holy Grail is not, in fact, the cup from which Christ drank but was the tomb of Mary Magdalene. Historians all over the world accused the book of being historically and scientifically inaccurate. It was the thrilling nature of this book and the controversies surrounding it that helped publishers sell 80 million copies globally.
